Recording is actually a time-intensive experience, and issues that come up often seem amplified.

No one wants to wait for one hour while the guitar player goes to Guitar Center for new strings. So, to keep things going smoothly and efficiently, below are a few things to do in preparation:

1. Practice! You would be surprised how many bands come into the studio clearly unprepared. If you can't play through the song without making errors, then you're not ready to record yet.

2. Be sure your songs are finished. Going to the studio hoping to finish lyrics or parts on the spot is usually a recipe for dissatisfaction. If you want inspiration, surf the internet for rock music lyrics.

3. Record yourselves. It's extremely useful to record your practice working with a simple tape recorder. The finished product won't sound very great, but you'll have the ability to hear if you're off time, or off key.

4. Get your gear in shape. Don't show up for a session that you are paying for with gear that doesn't work, cables that cut out, batteries that are going dead, or blown speakers. If you are afraid that your gear is less than excellent, make some calls.

5. Tune your instrument. Drummers need to put on new heads about a week before the session. The snare head needs to be replaced immediately prior to the session, and if you're doing more than one or two songs, think about bringing extra snare heads.

Absolutely nothing sounds as good on tape as a fresh snare head. Guitarists need to put a new set of strings on a few days before the session. Bring additional strings, as you probably will break one or two.

Bass players can replace their strings, though new bass strings may be a bit overly metallic. I knew a rock music band that switched bass strings a week or two before the session.

6. Let folks know you're busy! You don't need to be called in to work half-way through your session. Everyone involved has to clear their schedules.

7. Have a plan. It's usually better to have fewer songs to finish, and to know precisely which songs you are trying to get done.

9. Develop a vision. I like to come see a band just before I record them, just to get a feel for their sound, and develop my vision for the session. When you envision your record sounding like the latest MTV hit, you might be frustrated and disappointed.

The Pixies didn't sound like anything that came prior to them, nor does Modest Mouse, or the Beatles, for that matter. When you do not know who these bands are, familiarize yourself with them by listening to rock online music.

8. Relax! Recording is enjoyable, and there's definitely no pressure. Just be prepared, and you will have a smooth, enjoyable session with an excellent product at the end!
